“Liberating the Oppressed”

Sunday’s Big Idea

I am so excited about today.  There are so many things that I could discuss about how awesome today was, but I will stick to what we taught today.  We picked up in 2 Corinthians 8 where Paul is using the example of the Macedonian church supporting poor churches in the midst of extreme poverty.  It was a brilliant example of the Grace of Giving vs. the Law of Tithing.  The Macedonians had already given out of their poverty but the Scriptures tell us that they “begged” to give again.  When we begin to dig a little bit deeper into the text we see that Paul refers to the “act of grace” in connection with their giving.  Paul in Galatians quite clearly if we have to follow one law (circumcision in context) then we are required to fulfill all of the law, and that would include the Tithes and Offerings of the Old Testament which roughly equates to some 30% of our income.  The over arching question today was this; are we under Law or Grace.  Do we give because we have to or because we get to?  We also spent quite a bit of time talking about Matthew 23:23 where he tells the Pharisees to Tithe and to do justice and mercy and asked the question is Jesus telling us we have to tithe?  The answer from the Scriptures is a resounding NO!  We concluded our time in the Scriptures with a different approach to giving.  I had everyone close their eyes and ask God what He would have them to do.  It was amazing.  One man came up and said he felt led to take his “offering” and pay his infirmed neighbors mortgage this month.  I celebrate this kind of Freedom Church!  As a leader or a Christian would you celebrate with him as he gave to the need of his neighbor instead of 10% to your church?
